Seasonal Airborne Allergies
,In the spring and fall of each year some people suffer with a runny nose, stuffed sinuses, severe and nonstop coughing. These symptoms are most commonly a sign of seasonal airborne allergies. One key to the diagnosis of seasonal airborne allergies is that the symptoms occur at the same time of the year when the same trees and shrubs are blooming. Some of these various symptoms are secondary to histamine release triggered by the cells involved in the allergic reaction. Therefore medications that counteract the symptomatic effects of histamine have been used in the empiric treatment of allergy symptoms. The use of antihistamines do not always completely alleviate the symptoms. The side effects of sleepiness can be more bothersome than the sneezing and runny nose. Other anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical preparations have been developed that have been more effective and selective than the medications that were available before.
The investigation of allergies by allergists frequently involves performing skin tests or blood tests to determine exactly the substance the patient is allergic to. Then a serum of allergens can be prepared to be injected repeatedly to desensitize the uncomfortable allergic symptomatic reactions. Then the patient can be breathe in allergens that caused symptoms before and not react when they breathe in the same allergens.
Unfortunately some individuals can develop allergic symptoms after a time to substances that they were initially not sensitive to. They have to start at the beginning with skin tests and preparation of a new serum. Following this process through specialist consultations and numerous injections can add up to an expensive total treatment cost. A course of injections performed in my teen age years totally relieved all of my allergy symptoms the worst of which was almost nonstop coughing. The symptoms were gone from age 18 until age 55. In my mid 50’s the symptoms were there again and I used auricular therapy successfully.
Using the techniques of auricular (ear acupuncture treatment a patient can be desensitized to an allergen once the substance that produces the allergic symptoms is identified. Nadar Soliman, MD is an expert in auriculotherapy and has written about allergy treatment. Dr. Kohler has developed a method that first collects a sample in the air filter of a heating system or air cleaner. The filter is wiped with a paper towel and the towel is placed in a plastic bag. Whatever allergen is producing the symptoms of airborne allergies is in the air the person breathes. That substance or substances will be in the filter and then in the paper towel. This obtains the allergen for desensitization without skin tests or expensive blood allergy testing. The desensitization usually is accomplished in one to three treatment sessions. If the patient develops symptoms another time of the year the process is the same. If the desensitization wears out then the auricular desensitization process can be easily repeated.
Other allergy treatments using body acupuncture have been developed like Nambutipad Allergy Elimination Technique. (NAET)
